Stepping into my first powerlifting competition was one of the most challenging—and rewarding—things I’ve ever done. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way and opened my eyes to a new world of training, mindset, and growth. This experience wasn’t just about lifting heavy—it was about discovering what I’m capable of, physically and mentally.
What I Learned on the Platform (and Off)
Training for and competing in powerlifting taught me so much about discipline, mindset, and self-worth. Here are the biggest takeaways from my journey so far:
1. Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone Is Powerful
This experience forced me into unfamiliar territory—and I grew because of it. It reminded me that doing something new, even when it’s uncomfortable, is where the real growth happens.
2. Form Over Everything
If you’re going to lift heavy, you’ve got to do it right. Form is the foundation of every lift. It’s not just about strength—it’s about safety, longevity, and control.
3. It’s Okay to Do Something Just for You
One of the biggest lessons? I don’t need 100% approval from others to pursue what lights me up. As a mom, doing something just for me is powerful—and worth it.
4. Lead by Example
If I ask my kids to do hard things, I need to show them what that looks like. Tackling challenges, staying committed, and pushing through fear shows them what strength really means. Strong moms are cool.
5. Comparison Is the Thief of Joy
It’s easy to look around and measure yourself against others—but the only competition that matters is with the person you were yesterday. Stay in your lane and set your own bar.
6. Comp Adrenaline Is Real
The adrenaline of competition is wild. Sometimes it helps you hit lifts you didn’t expect, and sometimes it throws you off. But one thing’s for sure—there’s nothing like it.
7. Clean Lifts > PRs
I didn’t hit any personal records, but I walked away with clean scores—and that’s a win. Reasonable, smart goals lead to real progress.
8. Shoutout to the Dream Team
Brooke is an incredible trainer—she brings structure, knowledge, and encouragement.. And Jen? Jen is fully addicted to volume and we’re all just living in her hypertrophy-fueled world. I don’t know any woman stronger or more inspiring. They both push me to be better.
9. The Little Things Matter
Rest is critical—your muscles need it.
Eat clean, fuel with more protein, and yes… Nerd Clusters are officially part of my powerlifting prep.
Bar math in kilos is hard. I said what I said.
Always train with the right equipment from the start—it makes a difference.
10. Strength Comes in Many Forms
This journey wasn’t just about lifting. It was about mental strength, patience, self-discipline, and redefining what success means to me.
