This past month, Hanna and I stepped onto the platform for the USA Powerlifting State Championship. No personal records (PRs), but honestly, we walked away with something even better: a completed meet, no injuries, and an unforgettable experience shared with incredible people.
We both landed at least one successful attempt in squat, bench, and deadlift – which means we got a final score. That might sound small, but under the pressure of meet day, it’s a big deal. Your heart’s racing, pounding out of your chest, before the squat even begins, and no matter how dialed-in training has been, competition hits completely different. The adrenaline, the timing, the atmosphere – it’s a beast of its own.
Leading up to the meet, we took a proper de-load. At that point, you're not building muscle anymore – it's all about recovery, priming, and being mentally ready to lift. That, and staying on top of nutrition...
Supplements were in play as always – BCAAs, creatine, protein. But pre-workout? Total gamble for me. I cramped up early and instantly regretted it. I know better. Still do it. Every time.
The day was an absolute whirlwind – just two of us competing, but it felt like a full-on storm of adrenaline, warmups, chalk, snacks, and cheers. It went by way too fast. I wish I had slowed down and enjoyed it more in the moment. But that’s how meet days are: intense, fast, and deeply rewarding.
Shoutout to Brooke – our badass trainer who brings fire and clarity to everything. And Hanna – my number one fan, my energy bus, and the reason I kept smiling and pushing myself to do more. And to my husband, Doug, who couldn’t be there that day, but always has my back! I couldn't have asked for better people in my corner.
Also… hi, my name is Jen, and I’m addicted to volume. I thrive on reps, intensity, and pushing the edge – even when I probably shouldn’t.
That said, one thing I was reminded of throughout our training: everyone has an opinion, and usually an excuse. Some are valid. Most? Just self-imposed limits. And I’m not here for that. Don’t limit yourself. Ever.
So no PRs, no injuries – but a whole lot of growth, grit, and gratitude. That’s a win in my book.
Can’t wait to be back on that platform again.
